the now-infamous Amadou Diallo case, Urmston sings, "Let loose on the
running man/ making like he's a lesser man." The band uses the case to
question in more general terms the efficacy of the judicial system as
a vehicle for social justice:
Another day's over, the decision still stands.
His honor in his chambers still washing his hands.
You know he's been feeling in his room all day,
Just trying to wash all his conscience away.
No one's asking for hangman's tree,
They're just looking for something true to believe in.
Here, we see that State Radio's particular brand of revolution is
non-vindictive, in that Urmston and his band are not "asking for a
hangman's tree". In marked contrast with the angrier tropes of many
political rock bands, State Radio seeks not to punish those
responsible for the wrongs it sees in American society and in the
broader world, but simply to correct injustice.
